Recognising the importance of family life, the UK Government offers a variety of Family Visas. If you are the family member of a British National/permanent resident or of an EEA-National you may be able to apply for a Visa to live in the UK.

Spouse Visas

The Spouse Visa is given initially for a two-year probationary period and can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and British nationality.

If however, the couple have been married or have been in a civil partnership for at least four years and have been living together outside of the UK during that time, an application for ILR can be made immediately.


In order to qualify under this category you will need to satisfy the Entry Clearance Officer that you have an intention to maintain a long lasting relationship and are able to maintain and accommodate yourself without recourse to public funding.

You have permission to work in the UK during this period. You can also enter and leave the UK during this period without any further permission.

Fiancée Visas

The Fiancée Visa allows entry into the UK for a period of six months in order for the couple to marry or register their civil relationship.

Applicants for a Fiancé Visa must intend to marry or register with a partner who is a British citizen or permanent resident. Applicants will be required to provide evidence of their intention to marry.

After the marriage or registration applicants are required to apply for the Spouse Visa. This visa is for a 2 year probationary period and subject to meeting all requirements and continuing to live together the applicant may be granted Indefinite Leave to Remain.

To qualify for an Entry Clearance application as a Fiancée there are basic requirements that must be met. Both parties must be at least 18 years of age, have met and be intending to marry OR have undergo a civil partnership registration.

You must marry/register with your intended Spouse within this six month validity period of the Visa. Once you are married you will be eligible for apply for the Spouse Visa.


Settlement Visas

This visa allows you to make an application for settlement for those dependant relatives who have no one n their country of origin. This normally includes elderly parents or grandparents and other dependants

To qualify for an Entry Clearance application for settlement there are basic requirements that must be met. The party must be emotionally and financially dependant on the sponsor, the maintenance and accommodation aspect of the Immigration rules must be satisfied.

The Visa will be for Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK

UK Ancestry Visa

The UK has a rich history of culture and heritage. Many nationals of Commonwealth countries may have had previous generations born in the UK. Many applicants from Commonwealth countries who can prove their descent from a grandparent born in the UK may be eligible to migrate to the UK for a period of 5 years. After this time it may be possible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain and British Nationality.

To obtain an Ancestry Visa it is necessary for you to fulfil the basic prerequisites set out by the UK Immigration Authorities.

You must be from a Commonwealth country, aged 17 or over and have a grandparent who was born in the UK. You must be able to work in the UK and be able to support yourself and any dependants.

The Ancestry Visa entitles you to seek employment in the UK for a period of up to five years. After five years you may be able to apply for permanent residence as long as you continue to meet the requirements of your Visa and demonstrate that you have been employed and not travelled outside the UK for longer than the allowed time periods.
